Activities
Through
the year, the order of St. Augustine and its youth prepare all kinds of
activities. The most popular are: New Year’s Eve; celebrating Easter;
St. Rita’s day; pilgrimage from Kosice to Gaboltov; St. Monica’s and
St. Augustine’s day; and more.
New Year's Eve
”What then is time? If no one asks me, I know: if I wish to explain it to one that asked, I know not.” (The Confessions, 11.14)
Traditionally,
we gather in the afternoon on New Year’s Eve to thank our heavenly
Father for all of the gifts that we have received from Him, to ask for
forgiveness from our sins and to ask for His blessing for the New Year.
Of course, the part of the program is for meditating but entertainment
and dancing is also a part of it.
We gather
here with young people who do not want to spend the end of the year
only by having fun without the real meaning. We offer them spiritual
crossing from “the old into the new.”
Easter
“Dear
God, your Son saved me with His precious blood. Let not the proud speak
evil of me; because I meditate on my ransom, and eat and drink, and
communicate it.” (Confessions, 10.43)
We
celebrate Easter from Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday and we offer
young people an uncommon way of living Easter. We start on Maundy
Thursday by celebrating the holy mass where we commemorate the
establishment of the Eucharist and remind ourselves of its value for us.
On
Good Friday, we commemorate the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus
Christ. This is a mourning day and the program includes adoration in
front of the Cross.
We continue on Holy
Saturday. In the late evening, the celebration of the resurrection of
Jesus starts. The joy from His victory keeps us awake through the whole
night.
Feast of St. Rita
Our
Augustinian family celebrates this feast on May 22nd. In every
community, holy mass is held after which roses are consecrated. Roses
are one of the signs of St. Rita.
“15
Thursdays of St. Rita” are in preparation for this day. There is a holy
mass and time to ask St. Rita to pray for us on each of these
Thursdays.
Pilgrimage Prešov - Gaboltov
All
of us are pilgrims on Earth and we travel into heaven to be with our
Creator – as our father Augustine says: “You have made us for yourself,
and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” (Confessions, 1.1)
We Augustinians remind ourselves of this by organizing the
pilgrimage to Gaboltov, a place consecrated to the Virgin Mary in the
Archdiocese of Kosice. This pilgrimage takes place in July. We start in
Presov and we walk through the villages where the inhabitants give us a
place to stay overnight. We walk physically on our feet on our journey
to Gaboltov, and we walk spiritually on our journey to heaven by
discussing different topics of the faith. Every pilgrimage has its own
theme. There is a short lecture every morning followed by silence for
everyone to reflect on the lecture. Later we get into small groups and
share our thoughts. Every evening we hold holy mass in every village
and prepare an entertaining program for the inhabitants afterwards.
We wish you a nice wandering through our website. :-)
Life in the community
“What
I do know of myself, I know by Thy shining upon me; and what I know not
of myself, so long know I not it, until my darkness be made as the
noon-day in Thy countenance.” (Confessions, 10.5)
If you are
thinking about your life and you desire to dedicate your life to God,
you can spend a few days with us in the second half of August to make
sure you are following the right path. You can find out what life in
monastery is like and learn some characteristics of the life in the
order of St. Augustine.
Feast of St. Augustine
“Too
late loved I Thee, O Thou Beauty of ancient days, yet ever new! Too
late I loved Thee! And behold, Thou wert within, and I abroad, and
there I searched for Thee; deformed I, plunging amid those fair forms
which Thou hadst made. Thou wert with me, but I was not with Thee.”
(Confessions, 10.27)
The feast of St. Augustine is very important
for our community since he is our patron, our spiritual Father, and we
try to live his spirituality admonished by his rules that he wrote in
the fourth century.
This feast starts in the afternoon on August 27th when we celebrate the memory of St. Monica, mother of St. Augustine.
On August 28th, there is a holy mass after which we gather with our priests, friends, co-workers and admirers of St. Augustine.
